Prior to their disbanding in 1985, the Cosmos had signed the likes of Pele and Franz Beckenbauer in an attempt to popularise football in North America.
Meanwhile, Liverpool chairman Tom Werner insists the club have no intention of selling Luis Suarez.
The Uruguay forward has been linked with a big-money move to Manchester City although Blues manager Roberto Mancini has dismissed such speculation.
Suarez has become a match-winner for the Reds, his two goals in the 3-0 win against Wigan on Saturday taking his total to 10 to become the leading scorer in the Premier League this season.
And ahead of Saturday's clash with Swansea, Werner has guaranteed fans he will not be selling the player
Asked if Suarez could be sold in the immediate or longer term, Werner said: "Absolutely not. He's a beautiful player to watch and, as a Liverpool fan, I hope I'm watching him for many years to come.
"We made a long-term contract with him and we are going to see a lot of his play at Liverpool."
