Saron student barred from pub fell through smoking shelter roof when he tried to sneak in

AN Amman Valley student who tried to climb into the beer garden of a pub he was banned from fell through the plastic roof of its smoking shelter.

Nathan Lee Jefferies, 20, of Dyffryn Road, Saron, pleaded guilty to criminal damage when he appeared before Llanelli magistrates this week.

The court heard that at around 1.45am on New Year's Day a barman at The Square pub was collecting glass in the beer garden when he saw Jefferies trying to climb into the enclosed beer garden.

"He believed he wasn't allowed in the pub, so he stopped him," said prosecutor Ellie Morgan.

Miss Morgan said that when the barman thought Jefferies had given up he went back inside to wash the glasses.

"He went back outside and saw the defendant standing on the fence next to the smoking shelter," said Miss Morgan.

"He couldn't get to him because the crowd was too big, the defendant took a step onto the smoking shelter and fell straight through it."

The court heard the plastic sheets were repaired at a cost of £60.

Jefferies was arrested on January 6.

Laura Sherwood, mitigating, said the facts given by the prosecution were accepted and that he had given a guilty plea at the earliest possible occasion.

"He accepted that he should not have stood on the roof and that he should have foreseen that it would not have taken his weight," she said.

"He is remorseful for this incident."

Ms Sherwood said her client, who was studying access to health at Gorseinon College, was of "quite high intelligence" but his judgment had been clouded by alcohol.

"He wants to do a degree in nursing or radiography," she said.

"He has already been accepted to study at Cardiff or Exeter.

"On weekends this gentleman seems to go out to consume alcohol in an effort to blow off steam.

"He seems to get into situations where he is not in control.

"On this occasion he would not have climbed on that roof, unfortunately with alcohol he appears to have gone against his instincts."

Magistrates fined Jefferies £75, ordered him to pay £85 court costs, along with £60 compensation and a £20 victim surcharge.
