Runners ready to step up and support Claire
A GOWER fun run has been organised in order to help a girl travel to America for life-changing surgery.
Claire Beynon, an 11-year-old from Middleton near Rhossili, is hoping that her family and friends can raise £45,000 to send her to America for an operation that would make a huge difference to her life.
Claire's Challenge, as it has been called, has already seen a fundraising car wash and a barn dance.
The Knelston Primary School pupil was born with cerebral palsy, and as a result finds it difficult to walk. The hope is a trip to a hospital in St Louis will enable her to have specialist surgery that could see her mobility improved greatly.
Speaking on her Just Giving website she said: "Cerebral Palsy affects everyone differently. For me it means my knees turn inward and I have difficulty with co-ordination and balance.
"Walking can be very difficult. I have daily physiotherapy stretch of my muscles which helps prevent me from getting deformities.
"I have a fantastic opportunity for a life-changing operation called Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy.
"We have chosen to go to St Louis Children's Hospital where it's chief neurosurgeon Dr TS Park has completed thousands of SDR operations.
"After the operation I hope to be able to do the things other children take for granted. Having the operation would mean my family wouldn't have to worry about my future anymore."
Claire's uncle, Andrew Butler, said: "We have set up a fundraising committee and have a few ideas to raise money for the charity Claire's Challenge.
"She's a lovely girl, as good as gold. She has a twin brother and my son is the same age and they playing together but as she is getting older she is slowing down.
"The operation will make a big difference to her life."
The two-and-a-half mile fun run will take place on Saturday, starting off at 2pm from Crofty Park to the Dolphin Inn in Llanrhidian with around 100 runners set to take part.
In the evening there will be a live band and a hog roast at the Crofty Inn.
