WELSH rugby hero Martyn Williams said he was honoured to be starting a walk in memory of a couple who died in a plane crash.

The annual Walk for Al from Maesteg Golf Club over the Garnwen Mountain to Afan Forest Park and back will be taking place on Sunday, March 24 to raise money for the Garnwen Trust.

The charity was set up in memory of Alex Collins from Maesteg and Bethan Jones from Porth who were killed in the Thai air crash in 2007, both aged 22.

The trust is currently raising funds to build a multi-purpose residential unit in Afan Forest Park.

The specially designed log cabin will enable groups of up to 12 disabled and able-bodied people to enjoy short breaks in the park.

Martyn will join family and friends of Alex and Bethan to walk the eight-mile route.

The rugby star, who is leading the Velindre Cancer Centre's Kilimanjaro Trek of a Lifetime in September, said: "I met Margaret and Richard at an event last June and was incredibly impressed with their courage and their commitment to raise funds to build this special log cabin.

"So, I'm honoured to be starting the Walk for Al, and hopefully getting some training in ahead of my Kilimanjaro trek."

Alex's dad Richard said they are delighted to have Martyn supporting the event.

He said: "We hope to make this year's walk the biggest and best yet, and due to the fantastic support we have received over the last five years, we are really pleased that work on the cabin will be starting in a few months time."

Walkers are asked to make a £5 donation or raise a minimum of £5 sponsorship. People can register at Travella's in Maesteg or on the morning of the walk at the Golf Club from 9am, where free coffee will be available through the generosity of Starbucks McArthurGlen.
