ROCK star Brian May said he hopes the Welsh electorate will vote Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones out of office over her proposed badger cull.

Assembly Members were last night due to vote on a motion to annul the Badger (Control Area) (Wales) Order 2011 following a debate in the Siambr.

The cull aims to try to eradicate the respiratory disease in cattle herds in West Wales by killing the omnivores within a dedicated zone.

Queen guitarist May — whose hits include Save Me and Is This The World We Created? — said he was aghast that Ceredigion AM Ms Jones was resurrecting the cull plan after it had previously been thrown out in the Court Of Appeal.

He said: "The badgers are now more threatened than ever because some Elin Jones has done some tap-dancing around what she was forbidden to do by the Judicial Review.

"The graceful thing for the Welsh Assembly Government would be to respect public opinion from their own public consultation — which revealed that 75 per cent of the populace was against the cull.

"I'm aghast at Elin Jones, it seems like she is full of incredible arrogance and is on some mission to kill against all logic.

"I hope people will vote her out of office at the next election." May visited the Welsh Assembly yesterday to listen to politicians debate a motion to cancel the cull — which was proposed by South Wales West AM Peter Black.

He said he had been a longtime supporter of the issue — having attended a judicial review hearing in Swansea last year — and denied suggestions that being a millionaire rock star from England meant he was out of touch with the plight of Welsh farmers.

May added: "It's a disgrace, there's no way I could sit at home and not be here to speak out.

"How dare I come in being a rock star and be English and think that I can mess with Wales?

"Well you know, badgers don't know if they are English or Welsh."

“Elin Jones is the reason I will never vote Plaid Cymru. As she is of farming stock she is totally biased on this issue. Let's have a cull of politicians and leave the badgers alone.”

“Every time there is some kind of cattle disease, the government responds with the usual primitive 'slash and burn' reaction. It is not surprising that our livestock never develop any kind of immunity and are susceptible to every kind of disease.

Elin Jones seems incapable of thinking out side of the box and to consider modern solutions to our rural problems.

I strongly support Brian May's proposal that the electorate vote her out of office.”

“Brilliant! Thank you Brian May. As an organic farmer keeping traditional native cattle I think my view should carry some weight. There are badgers all over my 100 plus acres and have been since I bought my farm more than thirty years ago. None of my cattle has ever been a reactor, despite sharing a boundary with a farm that had a significant proportion of their cattle killed for having TB.

Elin Dollop is an ignorant traditional farmer's daughter who is intent on destroying the environment in Wales. Her total incompetence was evident in the development of Glas Tir, the new environmental scheme for Wales, which only a handful of farmers have signed up to. In return for a ridiculous paperchase, which will cost more in admin than the value it delivers to farmers, the compensation will be derisory. Those farmers already farming environmentally will lose 80% of their funding under the previous scheme, despite having their single farm payment based on the low stocking levels required by their scheme. Elin Dollop's only concern is to redistribute their money among her friends, the environmentally unfriendly.

By now, those disadvantaged by the skewing of the single farm payment to the most environmentally irresponsible should have seen the disadvantage disappear. However, the dollop has ensured this European requirement will be delayed indefinitely in Wales, although that is not the case in England.

We need more people like Brian May to stand up for common sense and our lovely badgers.”

“As a nature lover, I am horrified that this cull is going ahead. Leading independant scientists (not the assembly cronies) have said that a cull will not work, and could make the problem of Btb worse with infected badgers running to unaffected areas when they try to escape. But since when did Elin Jones (who by the way has the face of a badgers behind) listen to the experts or the public; the majority of whom are against this mass murder order. Why did we even have this expensive sham of a consultation, when they have already made up their minds to go ahead with their plans? So much for democracy.
Figures for Btb cases in Wales are now dropping, thanks to the strict cattle movement and biosecurity measures that at last farmers have to adhere to.
This isn't the end of the anti cull fight, and now the real problem is that farmers face violent confrontations with animal rights groups and become hated generally for their part in this sorry story. But it isn't the farmer's fault - it's the NFU and Elin Jones, who has misguided them with false promises of a land without Btb. What is really sad is scientists are close to a vaccine for cattle, but due to loony EU laws we will not be allowed to use it in this country. RIP brocky, you shall be sorely missed.”
