Could Robert De Niro be a Swansea City fan?
MICHU, Chico and Co have been given a glamorous new home in New York City.
Promotional posters for each Premier League team have gone up across the Big Apple, encouraging New Yorkers to pick a team to support.
The posters have given each Premier League team a location in the Big Apple – whether it be in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx or Staten Island, with the Swans sharing the Upper West Side with Liverpool, while champions Manchester United have been located in the Upper East Side. South Wales rivals Cardiff City are located in the borough of Brooklyn.
The Upper West Side is a neighbourhood in Manhattan that lies between Central Park and the Hudson River, and between West 59th Street and West 110th Street. It has a reputation of being home to New York City’s cultural and intellectual hub, with the world-famous Columbia University located at the north end of the neighbourhood. Some of the famous people to have homes there — and are potential new fans of Michael Laudrup’s team — include Matt Damon, Robert De Niro and Al Pacino.
The poster, which has gone up in bus stops and other spots across the metropolis, has been put together by US broadcaster NBC Sports, which is promising to show hundreds of Premier League games this season.
Swansea Council says this promotion again shows the benefits of the club’s Premier League status.
Nick Bradley, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration, said: “New York is one of the world’s biggest, most vibrant and best-known cities.
“Having Swansea featured in hugely populated areas like Manhattan and the other boroughs is the type of exposure you just can’t buy because it means millions of people could potentially be introduced to the name of our city for the very first time.
“Some people in New York will already know of Swansea because of the Dylan Thomas trail there, but this promotion shows we're a city of sport as well as a city of culture.
“The concept of New Yorkers picking a team based on the map is also exciting because it could lead to Swansea becoming one of the most popular teams in the affluent Upper West Side. That could potentially generate more interest in our city as a place to visit at a time when we’re already enjoying an unprecedented profile in other parts of the world like Scandinavia and South Korea.
“Campaigns of this nature build on all we’re continuing to do to make the most of Premier League status by promoting Swansea Bay in the UK’s footballing heartlands.”
Some of the famous landmarks in the Upper West Side include Columbus Circle, the Lincoln Centre and the American Museum of Natural History where Night at the Museum, a famous comedy movie starring Ben Stiller, was set. Time Warner’s headquarters are also located there.
Other Premier League team locations include Chelsea in Battery Park and the financial district, Sunderland in the Bronx and Manchester City in the midtown area that includes Times Square.
