Rising guitar star comes to Garage
THANKS to the power of the omnipresent Stephen Fry and his glowing tweet about John Gomm, the funksome guitar experimenter is getting some well-deserved time in the sun.
The self-effacing Blackpool lad has always preferred to let his guitar do the talking — and more often than not it sounds as if it is speaking in tongues — so he isn't exactly courting the attention. When we spoke he had just given the cold shoulder to a plea to be an act on Britain's Got Talent, weeks after auditions have closed. But he is heading this way, playing Swansea's The Garage today, from 8pm.
But the increased attention does have its advantages, not least because of the millions who have flocked to his site, but also because it has led to an email from one of his life-long heroes, David Crosby.
If Crosby and Michael Hedges are his two Pole Stars, John picks up the baton of experimentation from them with ease.
So if you think guitar-led music has been sounding a little stolid of late, he should blow those cobwebs away, digging into flamenco, Indian rhythms, blues and folk.
And his habit of using the body of the beast to beat out percussive strikes has seen him dubbed a one-man symphony.
