Reverend Gwyn Ieuan Morgan arrested over child sex claim
AN 81-year-old reverend has been arrested over alleged historic sexual activity with a child.
Gwyn Ieuan Morgan, of Davies Estate, Johnstown, Carmarthen, was arrested last month over the allegation dating back to the 1980s.
Reverend Morgan is minister of Bryn Iwan Chapel, near Cynwyl Elfed and Moreia Chapel in Blaenwaun, north of St Clears and has served both since 1972.
He has been suspended from duty at both chapels following his arrest.
Both chapels belong to the Union of Welsh Independents Churches (Undeb Yr Annibynwyr).
Mr Morgan, originally from the Llanrhystud area of Ceredigion is currently on police bail.
A letter has been circulated by officials of both chapels to all members of the congregation informing them of Reverend Morgan's suspension.
The Union of Welsh Independents Churches said it has been informed by police that a minister in an independent pastorate in West Wales had been arrested and questioned about an alleged historical offence.
Dr Geraint Tudur, general secretary of the Union of Welsh Independent Churches said: "As a charity which offers our members legal and pastoral support, we advised the churches involved to suspend their minister at once, pending the outcome of the police investigation.
"This advice was immediately acted upon by church trustees."
A spokeswoman for Dyfed- Powys Police said: "We can confirm that an 81-year-old man was arrested in connection with an historic allegation of sexual activity with a minor.
"He remains on bail while inquiries continue."
