Rethink call on cull order
THE Badger Trust is calling on the Welsh Assembly to reconsider the order made by the previous administration to cull badgers as part of a programme to control bovine tuberculosis (bTB).
The trust's solicitors have been instructed to seek the views of members of the new government, including newly-appointed Minister for the Environment John Griffiths.
In a letter to First Minister Carwyn Jones, the trust wrote: "We are … writing to ask whether it is your intention to revoke the order so that you have the opportunity to review the current position."
The trust has also asked to meet Mr Jones to discuss whether a legal challenge to the order would be necessary.
Pat Hayden, vice-chairman of the trust, said: "It is our sincere belief that the (latest) order was based on serious errors of science and law. If the proposed cull were permitted it would have no significant impact on the control of bTB in the Intensive Action Area."
