Residents 'up in arms' over road closure
A NEW 300-strong group has been set up to force the council to reopen a section of Trewyddfa Road in Morriston.
The Keep Trewyddfa Road Open (KTO) group has been set up by residents of Llewelyn Park Drive, Windermere Road, Ullswater Crescent and Mynydd Garnllwyd Road who are unhappy about the road closure which has been in place since November last year.
Gillian Watters, 53, of Llewelyn Park Drive, said: "A lot of residents are up in arms about the closure.
"We want it open in some shape or form — it doesn't matter if there are speed or weight restrictions in place as long as it is reopened.
"As residents we are worried the closure is going to affect the value of our houses and a lot of the elderly residents here have been cut off from the community centre in Llewelyn Park which they use on a Thursday.
"When the road was open they could drive there in five minutes. Now they are having to travel up to Morriston and use Neath Road to gain entry to the community centre."
The group has also launched a petition which it hopes to present to Swansea Council at a public meeting. The petition has 200 signatures calling on the authority to reopen the road.
Councillors for Mynyddbach, Byron Owen and Ceinwen Thomas, have also seen an overwhelming response to a survey they sent to residents affected by the closure in their ward.
Councillor Owen said: "The response I have had from the survey has been overwhelming.
"A lot of people have expressed opinions to me and the vast majority of people in the area want the road opened.
"I wouldn't say it is a complete majority, but it is not far off 100 per cent in favour of opening the road."
The section of Trewyddfa Road was closed in November following a landslide.
In June, the council's cabinet agreed in principle to close the road permanently, which will cost £250,000.
Cabinet member for the environment John Hague said: "I am happy to hold a public meeting about the issue.
"We want something concrete in place to present to the residents before we have a public meeting."

“Well I think councillor Owen's comments about "I wouldn't say it is a complete majority, but it is not far off 100 per cent in favour of opening the road." have been proven to be complete rubbish..... His 2 question survey which gave no information about how the road would be reopened or remain closed that was only sent to residents living in the Llewelyn Park Drive and surrounding area (i.e. Hardly anyone living in Trewyddfa Road) wasn't worth the paper it was written on. If Swansea council want a true understanding on how residents IN THE AREA OF THE SLIP feel then just read these comments...... Can I just point out that most of the residents in the area's main concern is not that the road remain closed but made safe. If being safe means being closed then so be it. And as for Morfydd Street, that has always been a really busy Road even before the closure of Trewyddfa. Its situated smack bang in the middle of a busy shopping centre - what do you expect? Yes I can see it probably has gotten worse since the closure, and maybe Swansea council can look to do something there too, like make it a one way road as there is more than one way to Trewyddfa than through Morfydd Street......”

“I cannot believe that so many non Trewyddfa road residents are commenting on the fact that they are inconvenienced with the closure of the road. My family have lived hear for 17 years now and my family have lived in the area for 62 years, when trewyddfa road was a dirt track for nothing but horses. When we first moved in the road was much much quieter which is one of the reasons I wanted to live here. We would be lucky to have 30 to forty cars a day pass by. The traffic lights situated outside the old Smelter's Arms were not there either, But traffic congestion and severe weather conditions have quickly aided in the deteriation of the road, causing the water to run down hill resulting in this land slide. It is about time you all got off your high horses and thought of the real problem here. Peoples houses and the saftey of them who are directly affected by this. I will welcome a swap of houses with any of you in the surruonding areas. You wake up each morning with cars beeping horns, drivers arguing and cursing each other because they are stuck at the lights and cannot get through the road, toghether with the constant worry of your property moving. This year we have already needed to cement over cracks that are appearing in the structure of the house, at a cost to us not you the surronding residents. Morfydd street residents think that they have to put up with high volumes of traffic. Well myself and my nighbours some of whom have lived here for 40 years had do endure problems every day not even been able to pull away from our houses due to the volume of traffic. We will not take this so called petition lying down. How can you say your houses will be devalued if the road remains closed. Spare a thought for families like me who's house is devalued whether opened or closed. There again if the road re opens, within a few years I probably will not have a house standing. After all, without traffic the bugalow at the start of Graig road slipped away within days. Lets hope you 300 or so residents will then be petitioning for the council to buy my family a new home to live in. (I THINK NOT).
From my comments you will probably know exactly where I live, come and knock my door, I will gladly support my cause.”

“Dont you think this affects all residents including Llewellyn Park Drive residents? Again you can think what you like thats your opinion, but yes I do know what im talking about, of course I do. And unless I wrote my last entrance wrong, Im really sure I mentioned peoples lives? Of course EVERYONE is concerned about safety, and I think its about time as I stated earlier for EVERYONE to come together and sort this out once and for all....This starts off with you up there and finishes with us down this end of Morriston, the knock on effects are tremendous, how about the saftey of my children too as well as the saftey of all the residents on Trewyddfa, Llewellyn Park Drive, and the streets surrounding these streets/roads...Do u not for a second think it has implications for us all...When the council deeded the gardens, then they should have become responsible, hence again what im saying, local government as well as long term residents all know of the landslips, yet has someone got to lose their life or their home before they finally do something about it. Im not against you on this .......JUST MAKE THINGS RIGHT FOR EVERYONE KEEP IT OPEN. p.s. I was refering to a grandson in my last entrance.”

“Dear Mr Morbid resident
No I am not the resident who wants the road closed for my Grandchild to play on it - she is only 2 and I wouldn't let her play on a road full stop. Ask the council for a retaining wall - that's a bit rich i am sure they would have said yes! perhaps it should have been thought of in 1964 when the gardens were deeded to the old Swansea Council to widen the road - which was only ever a dirt track. I.m not sure how you can possibly comment on the volume of traffic or the problems experienced when you don't live on the road and I havn't actually said I want it closed, I am concerned over the long term stability and safety of the embankment and the impact it could have on the surrounding houses. The residents of Llewellyn Park drive obviously don't give a damn about any safety issues. As for the emergency services - the council did inform them of the temporary Road closure. The area is covered in Japanese Knotweed and was cut down by the Council last September so they could monitor the movement of the embankment, but the roots were not pulled out and are still binding it. As for a survey by the councillors a 2 question - questionnaire!! only sent to the residents in their ward - not to Trewyddfa Road residents south of the slip, and I am sorry but i still think you are commenting on heresay as I am all too well aware of what certain residents in Llewellyn Park drive are saying!”

“As for the comment with regards to hearsay, YES I do know whats going on...I wonder if u are the resident who stated that they wanted the road closed so that thier grandchild could play in the road????? Furthermore, as you are residents of Trewyddfa was is not up to u as residents to ask the council for a retaining wall b4 it go to the state it has already??? The person or persons who actually moved all the establish plants and trees from the area did more harm than good. Or was this the intention of the people to being with????? I want answers the same as everyone else. As for Trewyddfa being a RAT RUN, thats rubbish....Come and live in MORBID/MORFYDD STREET for a week or so, as it take you 10 mins in the morning just to get out of the street due to the trail of cars not letting the residents out of their parking spaces, I have NEVER seen that on Trewyddfa and I have lived in Morriston most of my life.....Get a grip on reality please, an ambulance didnt even know a few days back that the road was closed and had to turn around and go the long way to get to the casualty(Sat Nav's dont tell u of road closures do they) .....This could even put lives at risk for goodness sake and all the complaining residents of Trewyddfa are worried about is thier grandchildren playing in the street??? I mean come on. Whats more important saving people lives or ur grandchild playing in the street. Have you forgotten there is Llewellyns Park!!!!! We should all be fighting together to get this road opened for everyone, not just a personal few residents whom are selfish...Yes there is landslip common knowledge , the council are just as much to blame for allowing the road/problem to get as bad as what it is, they have know this problem been there for many many years, also if they did their job to being with, the road wouldnt be in this state, instead of a quick fix here and there, get it sorted once and for all, so everyone can go back to the way it was and peoples lives are not put at risk. There are ways to stop this from happening, all car owners pay enough road tax on their cars to pay for the major repair works, the council have been spending money on this project and that project...Other major works then suffer and when it gets to the sate its currently in, then they decide "oh well lets close the road".. It makes me so angry. The trouble with government is its always a case of TO LITTLE TO LATE!!!!!”
