A RELIC from Swansea's industrial past is to be safeguarded for the future.

Roger Penberthy, of Compton Developments Ltd, applied to Swansea Council for permission to carry out work to make the grade II listed Lime Kiln in Castle, Road, Mumbles, structurally safe.

The work will include filling the kiln chamber with foamed concrete and the stabilisation and reinstatement of the embankment enclosing the flue.

A 1.8 metre fence is also to be built around the structure.

The applicant said the work was necessary to safeguard "the structural integrity of the kiln and to prevent its potential collapse".

Following a visual presentation, councillors gave planning consent, subject to any direction from CADW, the Welsh Government's historic environment service.

Mumbles Community Council supported the move.
