SWANSEA and Neath Port Talbot are set to lose up to 19 police officers to Cardiff.

South Wales Police is drawing-up plans to transfer the officers east to cope with the extra demands of policing the capital, the Post has learned.

The move comes on top of the cash-cutting merger of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot police divisions, and the axing of stations.

The Post understands as many as 19 officers could be lost, but the force has said half that number will initially be involved.

Assistant Chief Constable David Morris said the moves were necessary to ensure "demand is met", and he said they would not affect policing on the streets of Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.

“Its all to easy to criticise us for the governments failings. The majority of people who call us up in holes are usually the ones on the dole sponging off the tax payers and they are the ones who call us the most to sort out their marriages and out of control children. There should be legislation in place to charge the persistent callers who all tooo often waste police time and tax payers money. Stop whingeing and get a job!”

“On a trip to Cardiff, I noted that the local paper is protesting that 5 police stations are to close there. Perhaps there is more to this story than first appears!”

“Less indians, means more money for the chiefs. What chief is going to vote against that? Basic human nature is to look after one's own and that's exactly what the people we elect will do. When money is tight, it will still flow to the seat of power, whilst the rest of us have to suffer. I'm sure the local policemen would rather stay put. I've had 3 pay rises in the past 10 years at just about inflation each time. Local government employees get rises every year (even when all around are losing jobs) paid for by me and a nice pension at the end, so excuse me if I don't particularly feel sympathetic towards the plight of any policeman having to travel a bit to go to work, join the club. I am sympathetic towards the feeling of local people who "know" that this will affect policing, how can it not? I am sympathetic towards policemen who have no control over how they would like to see things done. One thing is for sure that nothing we say here will make any difference.”

“if the government cut down on all the paperwork the police have to fill in on any arrest, more police would be available on the streets, of course 19 police officers would be missed off their area but always remember... the safest place to be at anytime is at Liberty Stadium when the Swans play Cardiff, over 300 police involved in that op, WHO pays for those?? How about anyone arrested for offences caused by drink instead of a £80 fine...£800 then those people would think twice about causing trouble!”

“When will we adopt the American system and vote for our police chief? That will be true democracy.”

“I agree with Anon, more red tape and all we get from the public is abuse by way of 'officers' being lazy and so forth. When are you people going to understand that it's not our fault!!!!!!”

“If people only knew how many police were working on any one night sometimes 6 or 7 officers in one division. where are the 19 coming from . we are already struggling to answer calls to the 999 service. The"petty" charges are brought by CPS. The police are desparately trying to cope with more calls and less officers plus more red tape. And what is the thanks? Uproot your family or travel to cardiff everyday. Another slap in the face.”

“Why not let Cardiff have some of our police, they have either taken or tried to take everything else that we had. It is a wonder they don't have massive gates accross part of the M4 and lock them at will to stop anything good coming down our way, Cardiff because they are the capital want everything, they are like spoiled children”
