LLANELLI look to cast aside the horror show at The New Saints in midweek when they meet Carmarthen Town in the third round of the Welsh Cup at Stebonheath tonight.

Having gone 1-0 ahead in the fourth minute through Rhys Griffiths, the Reds were hit by a seven-minute three-goal blast just before the break.

They eventually succumbed 4-1 to bow out at the quarter-final stage of the Loosemores League Cup.

Player-manager Andy Legg pulled no punches. He said: "We lacked discipline and lost our shape during a 15-minute spell where players decided to do their own thing and not stick to what we had agreed to do.

Disappointing

"It was very disappointing.

"We started pretty well and scored a good goal but there was no coming back after we lost our discipline."

Legg would dearly like to progress tonight in a competition Llanelli have never won, although they reached the final two years ago where they slumped to a 4-2 defeat to Bangor City.

"I've won this trophy three times as a professional," added Legg.

"It is a magnificent cup and it would be great to be part of the first management team at the club to win the competition.

"But first we have to beat Carmarthen, and that will be tough as they have recovered well from a slow start. I saw them last Saturday and they played well.

"We know what to expect, a blood-and-thunder local derby, and games like this can go either way.

"But we beat Neath in another local derby in the previous round, despite finishing with just nine men, and we need to show that same spirit this time."

Hamstring

Chris Holloway pulled up with a hamstring injury at Park Hall and will be out for two to three weeks, while defender Stuart Jones is rated just 50-50 to make the tie.

Lee Jarman's ankle problem will rule him out and goalkeeper Ashley Morris is doubtful, but Legg anticipates Jason Bowen should make the line-up.

Carmarthen will be without Craig Hughes, while Sacha Walters is doubtful after contracting a virus.

Manager Deryn Brace admits his team could not be facing a more daunting task.

"It's a tough one, and certainly not the draw we would have chosen, but we must not sulk and moan but just get on with it," he said.

"And I believe we can give Llanelli quite a game.

"It's not what Llanelli do on the night but more about what we do. We are building our season nicely and if we turn up and play as we can, we can cause an upset.

"We have to step up to the mark.

"They will be smarting from their defeat at TNS and will be desperate to put that result behind them.

"But we have shown recently that we can play a bit and we are not going to Llanelli to make up the numbers."

The visitors have one advantage over their rivals in that they have previously won the trophy — former manager Mark Jones guided them to a 3-2 defeat of Afan Lido.
