URGENT attention is needed to sort out a Swansea street that has been labelled the "worst entrance to a city centre in the UK", say Evening Post readers.

Traders who have criticised High Street have warned that even the regeneration project by Coastal Housing will not solve the problems of the "alcoholics, drug addicts and beggars."

And now Post readers have had their say, calling for action to be taken.

Rebecca, from Swansea said: "There are plenty of available commercial properties there.

"Why don't South Wales Police take over a small one and have an office there?"

Another reader said: "Why don't they make High Street a pedestrianised area leading to Castle Street and Wind Street and make it all a cafe quarter?"

It has also been suggested that police take a zerotolerance approach and that the council should reduce rates: "Lower rates for properties in the area so businesses will be tempted to open up there."

Another reader put the blame on housing associations. he said: "One day maybe the council and others will wake up to the truth — housing associations are not the answer to the problem, they are the cause."

The four ward councillors said they were constantly dealing with the problems.

Councillor Erika Kirchner said: "I feel confident that with the councillors working with the police and other agencies, we are addressing the issues all the time."

Councillor Barbara Hynes added that issues included the placing of bus stops.

"High Street is a mess. It needs a lot of work doing to it," she said. "We would also like the bus stop to be removed from outside CK's as it is very intimidating."

While councillor Alan Lloyd said: "We have all got to work together. There is a lot of development going on. When that is done it will be a great improvement.

"We need a better police presence and better communication between the council and councillors."

Councillor David Phillips added: "Very shortly we are going to be regenerating the station, but when people come out of it what are they going to see?

It is walkway into the city. But it is all very well complaining that it is awful, businesses need to play a part. We are all in this together."

“I agree with expat, TAFF-Cyprus:Confronting and dealing with the sort of problems that beset Swanseas High St. (and indeed every High St. in the UK ) will take a complete reversal of values, where the arty farty, liberal lefty, druggie hugging socialist values, that have virtually destroyed the moral fabric of this once great nation, can be replaced with true British grit and values that will see criminals justly punished, layabouts forced to work for their keep and a drastic reduction in state hand-outs to the feckless and idle. Drastic solutions require drastic measures! It won¿t be easy and it certainly won¿t be pleasant, but we have to confront this as a long-term strategy for social change. A social revolution is needed!
As I have said in a previous post, there has always been depravation and crime in this part of the town, things haven¿t changed much in upper High St. in a hundred and fifty years¿.except that now there is the added evil of drugs and their associated problems.”

    “HONKING, ABSOLUTELY HONKING!
When I come home to Swansea this place really grips me, the people should be rounded up like stray dogs, no decency, no morals, no nothing, no place in society!!! Without taking a hard line on these people we won't get anywhere, people have to change their own ways and these people simply do not want to change. It's all well and good saying 'but I've had it hard, and I'm this and that' If they wanted to change they would. I don't know what the solution is I wish I did but I guess it would be against Human Rights if I came up with one !”

“Sorry Heather but the people of manselton are hard working and decent.

That's why you can still walk around the area safely and neighbours still check up on the elderly and the infirm.

A lot of the problem people in high street appear to be from the mumbles.

I was approached by one the other day who demanded £20,00 to buy some pimms.

When I refused he slopped off and shouted to his mate "tarquin that chap has just declined to aid me, what on earth shall i do"

Lets see Heather and co help and assist these people in their own area and not leave it all to the centre of swansea.

SA3 is not immune from taking on it's share of helping the city and the suburbs of swansea such as mumbles are included in that.

    I'm sure you;ll agree heather?”

“Can't you keep your mates up your end Manselton Jack? Then they can knock the High Street down and start again.

When I was a tiny dot my nan used to take me to the High Street to buy my dresses - it used to be the poshest part of Swansea. As for the dresses; they ended up covered in oil.”

    “I agree with realist
these scum bags are all on the invalidity benefit around a £100 a week before the extras like mobility and carers allowance unlike jobseekers looking for work at £65 a week, pathetic!!
I walked up and down high street this morning from ARGOS up to CK's there are 4 shops selling booze!
this area should be pedestrianised, and compusory orders put on the scruffy stinking buildings bringing the whole area up to scratch, never mind just whats happening with coastal housing!!”

    “Unfortunately, this will never happen.
You see.....these drug addicts etc have human rights. Take away their enjoyment of harrassing/victimising/intimidating people in Swansea, which 'costs' them nothing, then what do they have to look forward to? Everyone is entitled to a little bit of fun - right??
As for the begging in High Street. How come they can afford to look after dogs (and I do not mean their girlfriends!) as I can't afford one? Ok, shall race you to find the best pitch, could do with extra money!”
