Reader's news: Under the Driftwood Tree
WELSH band - Under the Driftwood Tree - have battled through to the UK final of the Surface Unsigned battle of the bands.
At the start of the competition there were more than 30,000 applicants which having gone through various stages, including regional finals, have now been whittled down to only 16 remaining bands. Under the Driftwood Tree are one of only two Welsh bands left in the competition.
The final takes place as a festival over two days; 26th and 27th September in Indig02 at the 02 Arena.
The four-piece play laid-back, surf-style music with a twist. They are not your average folk band as by gathering ideas from R&B, Hip-Hop, Rock and Ska and mixing that with the overtones of the Polynesian surf style brought by the ukulele, with a bit of Irish crack thrown in, their music has an added creative edge so that there's always a surprise around the corner. This along with their friendly chatter and sense of humour has so far appealed to people of all ages and from all walks of life.

Under the Driftwood Tree are Pembroke boys Alex Perry on lead guitar and Robbie Price on vocals/ rhythm guitar, along with Cardiff based Chris Stoodley (vocals/ukulele) and Kathryn Shanahan (vocals/djembe drum).
Under the Driftwood Tree are up against bands from London and Manchester, many of whom have been together for years, giving them an advantage over Under the Driftwood Tree who have only been together for 7 months. Despite this they have been making waves within Surface Unsigned; there's a quiet majesty about Under The Driftwood Tree, and when MIA's strutting Paper Planes is recast as wonky, hushed alt-folk it really is a magical moment, equal parts tender and gleeful.
Taken from a review written by Surface Unsigned only days after the first round of the competition, held in Barfly, Cardiff.
