Llanelli Star

A RARE bird has been spotted in Llanelli after more than 15 years.

Visitors at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Penclacwydd were lucky enough to get a glimpse of the extremely rare gull-billed tern.

Recent bad weather is thought to be behind the bird's return after blowing it off its usual summer course.

The terns breed across Europe in Denmark, Holland, northern Spain and parts of Eastern Europe.

This is only the second record of a gull-billed tern in the county of Carmarthenshire, with the first sighting recorded in 1996, also at the wetlands centre.
