Rally fan fumes at fast food chain's Scots bank note ban
A CHAIN of McDonalds's burger joints is under fire for banning Scottish banknotes.
Scots rally enthusiast Drew Anderson was furious when he tried to buy food at three branches in Wales and was told his money was not welcome.
Retired mechanic Drew, aged 66, was in Swansea as a volunteer official at the Wales Rally GB event.
Drew, of Girvan, Ayrshire, said: "When I tried to pay with a Scottish note, I was refused. I couldn't believe it.
"Later, I tried to use a Scottish note at a McDonald's on the motorway outside Swansea and the same thing happened.
"Both times, I ended up paying by credit card.
"The third time, I tried paying with a Scottish note at the McDonald's at the dockside and a young girl with a bit of a sulky attitude told me 'We don't take these'.
"She handed the note back and pointed out a notice saying they would not accept them.
"But the notice was covered by a Christmas tree.
"When you are queuing up, you can't even see it."
Drew asked to see the manager and was told it was the franchise owner's policy.
Drew added: "I did not have a problem anywhere else in Wales."
Franchisee Ron Mounsey said: "I've had so many counterfeit Scottish notes in the past that I've decided not to accept Scottish notes.
"One month, I racked up £260 of counterfeit notes and decided enough was enough.
"They aren't legal tender in Wales and it is my right to refuse notes, as I see fit.
"We're not racist or taking any issue with the Scots."
A McDonald's spokesman said: "McDonald's accepts Scottish banknotes across our UK restaurants.
"In this instance, the franchisee reluctantly took the decision to stop accepting the notes due to the economic impact on his business."
