RESIDENTS campaigning against a second permanent Gypsy and traveller site in Penplas will hold a rally next month.

Organised by the Leo's Community Action Group, they will be protesting against a possible site in the Penderry ward.

It is one of five shortlisted potential sites currently put out to consultation by Swansea Council.

On behalf of the action group, Louise Bolam said: "We are expecting a big turn out. Around 200 people attended the first one last year.

"We have also invited our local councillors."

The rally will be held on Saturday, February 23, at 11am on the Milford Way site.

Mrs Bolam said the action group was working hard to make sure everyone in the area knew about the consultation process.

She said consultation forms would be handed out on the day of the rally for anyone who wanted to make their views known.

"Some people still don't know about the consultation," she said.

"We want to make sure everybody is informed."

The consultation on the five potential sites runs until the end of March. Swansea residents are also able to view all the documents relating to how the short-list was drawn up.

The other four sites are the former greyhound stadium (Cockett); the rear of Parc Melyn Mynach (Gorseinon); proposed cemetery (Gorseinon); and Swansea Vale (Llansamlet).

Anyone wanting to get involved can go online, visit their local library or book an appointment to speak to an officer between January 21 and 25.

David Phillips, Swansea Council leader, said: "The council wants the public to play a full part in this process. No decisions have been made about any site and none will be until after the public consultation."

“BobDavies2 - did you say it was one gypsy family you lived by - not a whole site of them?”

“JohnSW4, well looks as though someone's house will become valueless, it's still a suitable site considering it ticks all the boxes.

Sorry mate, but it's certainly fitting the criteria the local authority are looking for. I wouldn't imagine the gipsy community would object! Bishop Vaughan school have taken members from the gipsy community for many years.

I have lived opposite a gipsy family for years, and found them very community based, I am sure the community of penplas will interact, and find it an enhancing addition to the community.”

“There are 169 privately owned properties directly behind the site, some of which directly over look this site. An estate agent has already confirmed that there will be a significant loss in value of these homes if you could sell them at all!”

    Wondering where you live Bob!!
Just some info for you ! There are 4 property's 3 new ones that are facing that site the width of a road, all those will become value less!!
There are new homes to the right and left of that site! The road is used every day by school children! Many locals in Morriston have been attacked and cyclist!!
They use two schools the Catholic School Bishop Vaughan or ST Josephs Green Hill where the get bused to if they go! And I can promise you they are more than capable of supplying their own sewerage!!”

“Ok, I'm not going to be the flavour of the month for this, but the Penplas site does have a number of positives in its favour.

    1. A large square flat area.
    2. concrete hard standing.
    3. Water supply.
    4. Sewerage supply.
    5. Direct access to the main road.
    6. Existing entrance.
    7. No over head power lines.
    8. Not over looked by private rear gardens.
    9. Local schools and facilities.

It has to be high on the consideration list, as it ticks all the boxes.”

“The consultation on the five potential sites ! What needs consultation is whether those non travelers are prepared to go to Penderry !That site has been vacant ever since the super market sited there was burnt down!!Its obvious that no intelligent thinking as been applied to the chose of putting a Gypsy site between two of the largest council estates! Is this what they want for those living there!!! http://tinyurl.com/bkrznpn
They Traveler problem is a Llansamlet Problem and if they are determined not move it out of Swansea East then it should stay in Llansamlet its madness to simply double the problem in Swansea East ! Besides you will have all the Labour councilors working hard to stop collateral damage to the party! Think about it!!”
