“This is just silly. Why don't the police stop wasting time going to coffee mornings for a chat with the locals and start doing their job? They know what the problems are - hundreds of people phone in and let them know. But what happens when you report an incident? We then get a bit in the paper about taking the incident 'very seriously' and then they all go back to the station for another round of tea and Welsh cakes.
There used to be a thing called walking the beat. This was done at a regulation speed of 2 1/2 miles per hour for the purpose of 'interacting with the public and gathering intelligence about possible criminal activity'. That way members of the public got to know their beat officer and would often pass on snippets of information.
They don't do that anymore. If you do see police officer's on foot they are usually cackling away to each other and appear to be taken part in a walking race. I once stopped a pair of officers doing just that in Llanelli and said to them "Good God did you see that?" They both stopped their chatting long enough to look up in horror and exclaim "No what happened?"
I replied "Well you are not paying much attention to the public then are you!"”
