RAF Air Cadets to attend RAF Fairford camp
Young Air Cadets throughout South and South West Wales are excitedly preparing to attend an annual camp at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. This is only one of the many opportunities that these young people have on offer each year. Held annually each July at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, the Royal International Air Tattoo, the world's largest military airshow, has gained the well-earned reputation as one of the UK's top outdoor family events.
The camp is scheduled to take place from Wed, 17 Jul to Tue, 23 Jul. Cadets love the fact that they will be accommodated in large multi-person tents equipped with US-style camp beds. Three hot meals a day are to be provided in the junior ranks mess for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Pilot Officer Rhys Thomas of No3 Welsh Wing ATC told your correspondent, "Time at the camp is spent preparing for the air show. Cadets coming from all over South and South West Wales will assist everywhere. They get access to the prestigious enclosures of Blue Chip Companies, the aircrew flight centre, and they assist with crowd control. This is just a small example of the tasks cadets assist with. They will get unprecedented access to a wide variety of the World's military and civilian aircraft, and they get to watch in awe the spectacular rehearsals on the days prior to the show along with a first class view of simply the world's best air show. It is an opportunity not to be missed!"
Any young person aged 13 - 17 years of age is eligible to join the Air Cadets and the organisation is staffed by adult volunteers, most of whom have no experience of the Royal Air Force prior to joining the Air Cadet Organisation, which is the biggest of the Commands in the Royal Air Force.
The Royal Air Force Air Cadet Organisation is a national organisation for young people aged between 13 and 20 years. It was established in February 1941 and there are nearly 1,000 squadrons divided into 36 wings, which then split into six regions. No3 Welsh Wing is just one of six Wings in the Wales and West Region. There are six Regions in the organisation as a whole.
Whilst the Wales and West Regional Headquarters are located at RAF Cosford in Shropshire, the Headquarters of No 3 Welsh Wing is located at The Grange TA Centre in West Cross, Swansea.
Our mission is "To be a modern, dynamic' sustainable organisation of choice for young people, offering fun and challenging opportunities."
