PUPILS at a Kidwelly school have thrown a party to celebrate a milestone anniversary of a Welsh youth movement.

Ysgol Gwenllian held a range of activities in a special day to mark Urdd Gobaith Cymru's 90th birthday.

The children came to school in their Welsh colours and decorated cakes in red white and green, made party hats and also designed birthday cards for Mr Urdd.

The event, which was attended by Keith Davies AM and a representative from the Urdd was hailed a massive success.

Head teacher Gareth James said: "The children had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed the activities. They came to school, dressed in the colours of the Urdd and took part in face painting.

"We have a strong Urdd club at the school and it was important for us to celebrate the occasion."

They were one of around 200 schools and communities which joined in the fun on Friday, when an estimated 20,000 children from across Wales took part in the celebrations.

Urdd was established in 1922 to give young people the chance to learn and socialise through the medium of Welsh.
