AN ANIMAL welfare group has staged a protest through the streets of Carmarthen to highlight their concerns about puppy farmed dogs and puppies in Wales.

Cariad (Care And Respect Includes All Dogs) members held a "cage roll" through the town, starting from the Pets at home store in Pensarn.

The group claims puppy farming contributes to the suffering of thousands of dogs.

It is also claimed Carmarthenshire has more puppy farms than any other part of Wales.

However, applications for puppy farms have previously been labelled a justified form of farm diversification.

Many of the protesters wore dog hats and masks, with one even wearing a full dog costume, with real dogs accompanying the walkers.

Linda Goodman of Cariad said: "The cage push through Carmarthen went down incredibly well.

''We were blessed with great weather and the public were very keen to engage with us.

"We handed out hundreds of leaflets to a willing public and were extremely heartened by their support in our campaign to end the misery caused by puppy farming in Wales.

''We also ran into some lovely people from the wonderful Dogs Trust who were also out campaigning in Carmarthen, and they were full of support for our campaign and congratulated us on the work we were doing."
