Protest over puppy farm in Carmarthenshire
ANIMAL rights campaigners are to protest on the steps of County Hall ahead of a meeting about a puppy farm near Llanllwni.
They will stage their demonstration before Carmarthenshire Council's planning committee meet to debate the controversial plans for Beili Bedw Farm.
Farmer Dylan Jones has applied to the council for a retrospective planning permission.
He wants to change the use on an existing agricultural shed into dog breeding kennels.
The application was submitted earlier this year after campaign group Puppy Alert claimed it tipped off the council that the shed was being used to keep dogs.
The application has also seen 739 objections from the public with many raising ethical and practical concerns.
Rebecca Bell, of Ceredigion Animal Rescue and Education, urged the councillors to reject the plans.
She said: "Carmarthenshire Council will not only be failing thousands of dogs but also bringing shame on the good name of Wales."
In the application's planning statement, Mr Jones's agent Owen Banks says the breeding business is a justified farm diversification and meets Welsh Assembly regulations and local planning authority policies.
The agent points out that there have been no complaints since the shed has been used as a dog-breeding kennel and suggests the activity is similar to an agricultural activity.
Planning officers have recommended the application be approved on condition that the number of dogs at the site is restricted to 96.
A final decision on the application is expected to be made at the meeting on Thursday morning.

“If Carmarthen councillors had any sense they would realise that West Wales already has a dreadful reputation for puppy farming and kennels with appalling conditions and they should tread very carefully before granting any more licenses of this nature.”

“I don't belong to any "group" but I empathise with their intentions. Taking away the emotionaly "clouding"issues how long would Dylan Jones be breeding puppies if he had to advertise them and deal with individual members of the public? How many puppy farmers would carry on this attractive finacially lucrutive trade if they did not have dealers to ring who will meet/collect puppies enmass? Strong legislation needs to be made to sort out the unscrupulous dealers. It's simple business logic supply and demand, no dealers demanding puppies then the supply will dry up.”

“Another problem mollie is that you are an activist and thus your word can rarely, if ever, be trusted. When a child lets off a cherry bomb you claim a nuke was launched, but you still you and people like are not willing to do anything to stop the problem.
All you really want is an excuse to not go to work, and unlike people like you, 99.999% of population do not consider Protesting as an acceptable excuse to not work.
Look at you, you are going to protest on Tuesday the 30th, and what will that achieve? You know the answer already, it is the same as the vast majority of protests have achieved.... nothing.
And hence, you people cannot be taken seriously because it proves that by actively continuing the same, proven failure of inadequate action that you and your group has absolutely no intention of every trying to stop puppy farming.
You have been told, NOW SIT DOWN!”

“Mr Wiliams ,I would very much welcome being invited to Beili Bedw Farm and have asked the council if I could visit ,also if a vet could join their inspection on the 30 th but both have been denied . However I have visited other such farms and I can assure you that the conditions are appalling . The television exposes of these 'farms' ( also the ones of HLS ) show ample evidence of poor animal welfare.
Maybe you would like to volunteer to be shut in a room for 7 years - don't worry someone will throw some food and water in every so often and hose out any mess - and see if you come out at the end of it healthy and in a sound mental state ?
I do not think it is extreme to ask that dogs are given light, warmth or exercise - do you? yet in the farms I have visited these are not provided.
The problem is that there are councils who have allowed these conditions to exist - they license them -”

“I was born and bred in Llanllwni a few hundred yards away from the mentioned farm - a farm I now very well. In 1972 I left the village to follow a career in the RAF. In them days the population of Llanllwni was a few hundred people.
In that time I have been a regular visitor, sadly to say that the last few times the visits have been for funerals etc. On these visits I have noticed that a few extra houses have built.
However, I find it very strange that 'The application has also seen 739 objections from the public with many raising ethical and practical concerns.'
Who are these people?? Has Llanllwni had a sudden influx of refuges or is it another case of people using Facebook and Twitter to jump on the bandwagon. Have these so called objectionists seen the conditions these animals are kept under? If so and they are kept under adverse conditions then they have every right to object.
However, I doubt whether any of these so called objectionists have visited the farm.
A few years ago I was stationed at an RAF camp not too far away from Huntingdon Research Centre where these so called animal activists subjected workers etc to years of abuse, violence, terror, bullying etc. These activists had no interest in animal welfare - they would have probably been involved in last years Student Riots, last weeks riots in London, Birminghan etc - they are just troublemakers!! They were anarchists!
I reiterate, if there are any animal welfare issues get it sorted, but do not jump on the bandwagon just on hearsay - THINK FOR YOURSELVES!!
