Prize duo head for Pontardawe - folk with Gwyn Jones

ON Friday the guests at the Valley Folk Club at the Ivy Bush Hotel,Pontardawe, are duo Gren Bartley and Julia Disney. Gren is widely accepted as being a talented acoustic guitar and banjo picker and also as a wordsmith, a prolific and exceptional songwriter using his influences from folk and blues traditions. This hard working young musician is constantly touring and forever writing, releasing a critically acclaimed new album Winter Fires last Spring.
Described as “a hidden gem of British songwriting” Julia was a UK songwriting competition finalist 2012. Employing a wealth of musicality, her songs are packed with rich harmonies, stories are told with a fresh outlook and against a background of original melodies with lilting piano, swaying rhythms and a stunning voice. Put the two together and you come up with a perfect musical partnership in Gren and Julia. The evening begins at 8pm.
On Wednesday Llantrisant Folk Club, The Windsor Hotel, Pontyclun present a showcase with Fiddlebox - Helen Adam (fiddle, vocals) and George Whitfield (accordion, vocals) and musician in the folk-rock band Pressgang. Their full and distinctive sound shows the influence of the rock, classical and folk styles in which they work.
Wednesday is also WOMEX13 Opening Concert at Wales Millennium Centre. Land Of Song sees Cerys Matthews joined by leading musicians and dancers from Wales to take you on an illustrated journey through 30,000 years of our Nation's story, music and culture. If you can’t make it to Cardiff, Music Wales will present a music tour of Wales featuring artists handpicked from global showcases appearing at Womex 2103 in Cardiff. With support from Welsh artists look out for Horizons Tour - A World of Music in Wales concerts.
