ANDY Powell admitted Wales felt the full backlash of Australia's shock defeat by Scotland in the autumn finale at the Millennium Stadium.

The Wallabies, panned by the critics in the build-up to Saturday's clash, produced a breathtaking display to claim a dominant four-tries-to-nil victory.

It was hugely impressive stuff from the Aussies in all areas of the game, but Powell also pointed out that a below-par Wales contributed to their own demise.

"We gave them a head start. We gave them 15 points and you can't do that in international rugby, especially against a team like Australia," said the Blues No. 8

"They lost to Scotland and we felt the backlash of it."

Warren Gatland's side boasted two wins from three matches before Saturday's game. However, the 33-12 hammering has stripped the gloss off Wales's November campaign.

"To be honest, it hasn't been the best, has it?" added Powell.

"There is work to be done, not a huge amount, just key areas like the contact area.

"But there is no cause for panic, especially with the bunch of boys we have got.

"It is a case of going back to your club, playing well in the Heineken Cup and then looking forward to the Six Nations.

"It is about putting this result behind us and moving on."

Robert Lloyd

“Admittedly Powell made an impact on the international scene this time last year. However, in my opinion when now starting to see how limited a player he is. Theres only so much you can rely on size”

“That was possibly the worst Wales performance in Gatland reign. Very few of the welsh players came out with any credit. Hook is nowhere near good enough to play fullback, his defensive play was awful at best. Hook is a good player but
not at full back, he is suspect under the high ball and gets caught out of position to often. If,as suggested, Hook can play in several positions, maybe they can try him at centre as it is unlikely he will be first choice at number 10 while Stephen Jones is there and with the emergence of Dan Biggar he could well find himself on the bench more than on the field”
