THE spectre of Gavin Henson continues to hang over Welsh rugby after he featured in a marketing campaign for the new Wales kit today.

The 28-year-old was pictured on a giant banner on the side of the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff just hours after it had been confirmed that he would appear in the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing programme.

The Ospreys centre has been on indefinite unpaid leave since last summer and has not played since suffering an ankle injury in the Swansea-based region's Anglo-Welsh Cup semi-final defeat against Gloucester in March 2009.

But Henson, who has won 31 caps and was an integral part of the Grand Slam successes of 2005 and 2008, had said earlier this week that he was desperate to play at next year's World Cup and was planning a return to the game.

However, his involvement in the TV series, of which former England internationals Matt Dawson and Austin Healey are ex-contestants, could mean he will not be able to make a return to rugby until December, which would leave him with a limited amount of time to prove his fitness and form to Wales coach Warren Gatland ahead of the global showpiece in New Zealand.

In a press release to mark the start of the Welsh Rugby Union's three-year sponsorship deal with Admiral insurance, Henson, who has a year remaining on his current Ospreys contract, said: "When the Welsh Rugby Union asked me to be one of the first to put on the new kit to help with their marketing campaign I had no hesitation.

"As a passionate Welshman I have always felt a great sense of pride whenever I have had the privilege of being able to wear the national jersey and this occasion was no different."

The two-time Grand Slam winner had said earlier in the week: "I've never been to a Rugby World Cup which is coming up in 2011 and I'm thinking about training for that.

"Hopefully I can get back into rugby, do well and get into the World Cup squad. It's the one thing that is not on my CV."

The decision to use Henson to help launch the new kit will further increase speculation over if and when he will pull on the red shirt in a Test again, but WRU Group chief executive Roger Lewis simply said the union were using stars "past and present" to launch the kit with the likes of captain Ryan Jones, wing Shane Williams and centre Jamie Roberts also on hand.

Lewis said: "Everyone in Welsh rugby is first and foremost a fan, we watch it, play it and work within its structure out of our love for the game and the national jersey is symbolic of our pride.

"The players, past, present and future are fans too, just as much as the journalists, the commentators, and the people out there who come along to the matches or watch them on their television sets.

"Every Welsh fan has a right to own and wear the national jersey with pride, just like Gavin does in our images, and we have also asked other significant stars of Welsh rugby's past and present to join our campaign.

"Whether you are a current or recent player, a legend of the game or someone with still more to offer Welsh rugby for years to come, there is one thing that unites you and us all in Wales and that is our love for the game and our pride in this jersey."

"I'd like to thank Admiral for their support, it is a privilege for Welsh rugby to have such a major international company on our jerseys and our gratitude also goes out to Under Armour for all the hard work and expertise which has gone into their latest high quality product.

"The new jersey keeps all of the technical specifications offered by Under Armour in recent seasons and offers a few more to ensure our players get the very best performance advantages available when match day comes.

"But just as importantly for our national sport the traditional colours will be appreciated and look great on the players and the fans alike and that is part of the thinking behind asking Gavin to help out with our ad campaign – we were looking for a model and he seemed to fit the bill!"

“Lisa, gorseinon; you have no right to throw your personal insults because someone has said something that YOU don't agree with. Grow up Lisa.”

“Roberto, how on earth can you compare Henson to George Best or Ronnie O'Sullivan??? What a totally disillusioned comment. Thats like saying shopping at Primark is the same as shopping at Harrods!
Henson has done nothing for the last few months so how can the WRU constitute him being the Icon on Welsh Rugby???”

“Hope Gavin makes enough money out of modelling as he will need the money in the future. He is a vain gifted player who has thrown it all away. the "George Best" of the Rugby Union World. A player that is exciting to watch, unpredictable, a maverick, and a match winner at best.A Ronnie O'Sullivan of Rugby Union who has pressed the self destruct button, and will Never Return to their former selves. what a waste....”

“Lisa, obviously English isn't your first language otherwise you would know about punctuation!! On the one hand you come out with "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything" and then you verbally attack Heather. As for Henson I'm not going to comment on that waste of space.”

“Gavin Henson would rather promote himself rather than the rugby teams that made him. If you want him back in the fold try by voting for Anne Widdecombe on come dancing, She may get more votes on this than the next election.”

“Im with you Heather, my cat has had more contact with Rugby in the last 18months as she likes to sleep on the TV. Are the WRU so out of touch with public opinion or are they just traeting us with contempt.”

“He's an embarrassment and I'm sure they could have found another player who's more deserving of the role?

It wasn't that long ago that he, along with some of his team mates, caused trouble on a train or was that the wrong Gavin Henson?”
