Positive pupils get their rewards
NEIGHBOURHOOD policing officers in Ystradgynlais have got together with local businesses to set up a new initiative aimed at rewarding school children for their positive achievements.
The first Sleeping Giant Awards were held earlier this month and saw awards presented in four categories: best school attendance, most improved school behaviour, sports star and community spirit.
The community spirit award will be determined by community events that local neighbourhood policing officers organise prior to the award ceremony, giving the children an opportunity to engage in these events and learn to value the communities they live in.
"We have four primary schools taking part in the awards scheme," said PCSO Becky Templeton. "Ysgol Golwg y Cwm, Ysgol Bro Tawe, Ysgol y Cribath and Ysgol Dyffryn y Glowr.
"We're aiming to hold four award ceremonies annually per school. The next awards will be held in September, and we'll be asking the children to make awareness posters about Halloween which will then be distributed in the community to coincide with Trick or Treat.
"We are hoping the children will benefit greatly by having positive praise and through acknowledging their achievements they will gain confidence and value. Special thanks are extended to Martin Harwood, manager at Tesco Ystradgynlais, and Ashford Price, Dan yr Ogof Showcaves for their kind donations."
