I WAS saddened to read the letter from Huw Evans, promoting his Plaid Cymru colleague Bethan Jenkins and seeking to hijack the campaign to save Swansea Coastguard Station for party political purposes (Post. September 9).

The reality is that the fight to save the coastguard station has had the active support of AMs and MPs of all parties, Labour, Conservative, Welsh Liberal Democrat and Plaid Cymru, in what is a non-political campaign run by people of all political affiliations and none. All of us have attended meetings, been on protests, written letters, raised questions and spread the word about the petition and the need to complete the government consultation form.

The last thing we need is party politicking. We need to stay united in our resolve to save this station and demonstrate to the UK Government that its perverse proposal to close it has provoked the unanimous opposition of the people of South Wales, North Devon, North Somerset and the rest of the Bristol Channel, irrespective of political affiliation.

“I had meetings in Swansea and Cardiff which I had not been able to rearrange. However, I have attended many other meetings and protests at which other AMs and MPs have been unable to get to. I also wrote to all the Lib Dem MPs urging them to attend the meeting staged in the House of Commons by Martin Caton and have been lobbying South West MPs to oppose the closure. Nobody can attend everything but members of all parties are working equally hard to try and save this coastguard station.”

“So what important business kept Peter Black away from yesterday's protest at Westminister. Fellow regional assembly members Bethan Jenkins, Suzy Davies and Byron Davies all managed to attend.”
