POLICE are stepping up patrols outside a Swansea primary school after a man peered into a changing room and stared at two young girls.

The incident at Parkland primary, Sketty Park, comes in the wake of two previous incidents where a "stranger" was found wandering around the school grounds.

Parents have described the incidents as "very worrying".

But head teacher Mervyn Christopher said he wished to reassure mums and dads, insisting that their children were safe.

He said: "We continually reinforce the message to children not to speak to strangers.

"The entrance to the school is looked after by adults.

"And I have kept parents informed of the situation as well as pupils. I don't want Chinese whispers going around the school or people to worry unnecessarily.

"There may be a logical explanation for what happened. But to be on the safe side we have contacted the police."

The alarm was raised on Thursday, at around home-time.

Two girls, who were in a changing room, were getting ready to go home, when a "male figure" tried to look through a window.

Police have been called to the school twice before, after a lone-man was sighted in the grounds without permission.

Mums and dads say they were concerned about the incidents, especially as the school is a stone's throw from three problem-plagued tower blocks at Clyne Court.

A public meeting last year saw more than 100 people turn up to air fears that a paedophile was living in the area.

Earlier this month, former Clyne Court resident Philip Kenning was jailed for six months after being caught with more than 1,000 child pornography photos on his computer.

One worried dad said: "We know that paedophiles have lived in this area, so when you hear about someone watching two young girls in a changing room you're, of course, going to worry.

"All the parents are grateful to the school for keeping us informed though. We just hope that whoever this person is gets found and the matter gets resolved."

South Wales Police confirmed community officers would be carrying out extra patrols in the area.

A spokesman said: "We were called to Parkland primary at 3.15pm on February 25 concerning reports that two females in a changing room were being watched by man.

"It is believed the man has been spotted in the school grounds on two previous occasions.

"We are now trying to identify this individual and asking people to come forward with information to assist our investigation."

“Surely it is about time to have a walkabout security guard in our schools.
People seem to think that they can use schools as shortcuts or for any other activity even when the children are in school time.”

“They always protect the guilty, if my children went to that school I would be concerned, I hope they are stepping up on their security, extra staff etc”
