MYSTERY surrounds a break-in at a Swansea Valley home when intruders left empty- handed — but only after digging up the floor of the garage.

Police brought specialist sniffer dogs to the Clydach property following the break-in in Heol Eithrim last Wednesday.

The dogs were trained to detect traces of guns, money and even corpses — but no evidence of any was found.

The incident has left police scratching their heads over the possible motive, and have appealed for anyone with information to get in touch.

A South Wales Police spokesman said: "Officers were called to a private detached garage which had been entered and the concrete floor disturbed.

"Specialist search dogs have been used during an examination of the scene."

The garage of the property is believed to have formerly had a pit in the floor, for working underneath vehicles. But it is believed to have been filled in with concrete up to 30 years ago.

The property's owner contacted police after discovering the disturbance, and finding the floor had been dug up.

He was unavailable for comment.

But Clydach councillor Gordon Walker said: "It is a total mystery.

"It is all everyone is talking about in the village.

"I went into the pub yesterday and the straight away people were talking about this excavation, and what it might be all about.

"The homeowner has owned the property for about 10 years I think."

Police are appealing to anyone with information about the incident or who saw any suspicious activity in the area between 8am and 4.30pm on Wednesday to come forward and contact 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously 0800 555111.

“siarad2 - there would still have been traces of whatever it was that you think they found. But a bit odd that they waited 30 years to dig it up. If it was a body, then surely you'd leave it there, because digging it up would draw attention to it. Must be a bunch of old people involved, given that what they were looking for was buried 30 years ago.”
