Ploiesti Travel Guide
PLOIESTI lies in the historical region of Wallachia in Romania, located 56km north of Bucharest and is one of the larger cities in Romania.
An advantage of staying in Ploiesti is its central location, bordering Baicoi in the north and Brazi in the south.
It is also close to tourist attractions, being situated near the famous wine-growing region Dealu Mare and there is direct access to Prahova Valley, a mountainous area of Romania extremely popular with tourists.
The location of the city means day trips to explore other areas such as Brasov, Bran and Bucharest are easily done, making it an ideal base camp.
The extensive network of main roads and railways also makes travelling around the city and to neighbouring cities relatively stress free.
The city’s main tourist attractions include, the Clock Museum which is dedicated to the art of timekeeping, the National Oil Museum along with Teleajan Valley linking Ploiesti to Brasov through the Carpathians.
The city itself has had a troubled history meaning economic progress has been slow, resulting from the devastation the city faced during WW1.
However, Ploiesti is characterised by its high standard of urbanisation being home to four thriving oil refineries, after Europe’s first large oil refinery was built there during 1856 - 1857.
The currency of Ploiesti is ‘the leu’, with Romania being one of the cheaper areas in Eastern Europe. Expect to pay on average, around £1 for a bottle of beer (which varies between different bars) and £7-£10 for a complete meal.
The nearest airport is Henri Coanda International Airport (OTP/ LROP) which is in Bucharest, Romania and is approximately 47 km from the centre of Ploiesti.
The cheapest flights start at £330, with most commercial airlines flying to Bucharest from airports in London, Manchester, Bristol and many other cities.
There is a wide range of hotels scattered across the city centre to suit everyone’s needs, with popular hotels being Hotel Prahova Plaza, Hotel Angelo d’oro and Vigo Central Hotel. http://www.hotelsploiesti.com/
