Plenty to prove

THE Scarlets continue Magners League action against Connacht on Saturday (3pm) with a two-pronged mission — to banish the demons of their shock defeat in Treviso and send out a message that Parc y Scarlets can be a fortress this season.

Nigel Davies and his squad are determined to get their league campaign back on the rails following their 34-28 setback in northern Italy.

There was plenty to encourage the head coach from that match, in particular, the individual performances of two-try debutant George North and fly-half Rhys Priestland, but too many errors and missed tackles cost the Scarlets dear.

As attention now turns to the visit of the Irish province — the surprise early leaders of the league following their 40-17 hammering of the Dragons — the message from Davies is crystal clear.

"We have to improve our home form. It is one of our key objectives this season," he said. "We won 50 per cent of our home games last season. We've got to make sure we make this place a difficult place for sides to come and we've got to win the vast majority of our home games.

"We don't want to end up where we did last season and if we win 80 or 90 per cent of our home games we won't."

The Scarlets are set to welcome back influential Aussie No. 8 David Lyons, who missed his first league game in two seasons last weekend because of a hamstring strain.

Prop Rhys Thomas is also set to figure after pulling up in training last week.

There are doubts, however, surrounding full-back Morgan Stoddart. Stoddart was replaced at the end of the first-half by Daniel Evans, again complaining of a slight hamstring problem and he may be rested as a precaution to allow the injury time to heal.

Lock Damian Welch is another doubt, although an X-ray on the hand he injured on Saturday revealed there is no fracture.

All eyes will be on Davies's selection for Saturday's match in the wake of his decision to rest British Lions Stephen Jones and Matthew Rees and Scotland wing Sean Lamont for the trip to Italy.

However, Davies insisted this week that squad depth, not individual prowess, is key to success this season.

"We wanted to get a win first out, but we will see over the season how important it's that the range of players in this squad get their opportunities and there was plenty to take from the Treviso game," he said.

"We are a Scarlets team, it's not about any one or two individuals, we have to back this squad as a whole and all the players within it throughout the season.

"We must give our talent the opportunity to show what it can do over the course of the season."
