Plenty to do without TV
SINCE I wrote on January 7 about elderly people living alone I have been asked what else people can do instead of watching TV.
Here are a few general suggestions.
Read a book, walk to the newsagents to buy a newspaper, both have the advantage over TV of being able to skip over the parts that you are not interested in.
Find other jobs to do in the house, garden or shed.

Avoid dangerous jobs like standing on a chair or a ladder, leave those for someone else.
Go to the pub or club in the evening to meet other people who have finished their day's work and have time to chat.
Buy beer in a glass with a handle, it will last longer than beer in a straight glass.
If you are staying after the first pint or two drink water, it is better for you and a bargain at about £1 a pint for both you and the publican. Some pubs won't serve it but you can find one that will.
On Sundays go to church.
Anything else, think up yourself. You may find you have no time to watch the television.
