Plans submitted for new Afan Lido complex in Aberavon
A PLANNING application has been submitted for a new multi-million pound sports complex in Aberavon.
The Afan Lido complex — which included the popular Aquadome pool — was destroyed after a fire broke out in December 2009 at the centre.
Earlier this year the council finally gave the go-ahead for the new complex to be built, more than three years after the original was devastated by fire — and today the authority announced a planning application has been submitted.

Corban Developments will now progress with detailed designs and specification works for the facility.
The aim is for construction to start early in the New Year and it's estimated that the project will take about 15 months to complete.
This follows the Council's Cabinet endorsement of the recommendations of the cross-party Scrutiny Task and Finish Group, established to look into the replacement for the Afan Lido.
The facility, set to be built on the Hollywood Park site at a cost of £13.4 million, will feature an eight lane, 25 metre swimming pool, a learner pool and a 100 seat spectator gallery.
There will be wet and dry side changing facilities, a cafe, indoor children's soft play area, community meeting rooms, youth club facility, 100 station fitness suite and a combined dance studio/dojo, as well as a spin room and four court sports hall with seating for 100 spectators.
However, there court be six courts if budget permits, with a second planning application submitted if a larger development is needed.
The design features an iconic wave roof to reflect its seafront location.
Leader of Neath Port Talbot, Ali Thomas said: "This project is now gaining a tremendous amount of momentum in coming to fruition.
This will be a wonderful, iconic twenty first century facility we can all be proud of and will be a focal point in enhancing our strategy and vision for regenerating the whole area."
