RETROSPECTIVE plans to convert a unit at Buffer Depot, in Towy Avenue, Llandovery, into a building to manufacture fish feed have been deferred, despite a recommendation of approval.

The application, by Olwen Hardwick of Llangadog-based Voda Feeds Ltd, would see two silos built to house raw materials in a compound and a portable office/canteen building.

However, 82 letters of objection have been received, as well as a petition from residents at Towy Avenue, Maesycoleg, New Road, and Cilycwm Road.

Among the concerns raised were unacceptable existing access, concerns about smells, noise, pollution and the visual impact of the proposed silos.

Concerns were also raised potential problems from flies, vermin, rats and cockroaches.

The application is for unit 5 of the Buffer depot site, a former MAFF storage depot.

The main building at the site is used to blend together a specialised compound feed for farmed trout and salmon, and seeds for a range of wild birds.

The proposed development will have two full time employees and 3-5 part time employees.

Speaking at last Thursday's meeting of the planning committee, local member Ivor Jackson asked for a site visit, saying: "This has generated quite a lot of interest up in Llandovery."

Members agreed to a site visit.
