PLAID Cymru's Elfyn Llwyd has said the Silk Commission on further powers for Wales will be crucial in the "next stage in the nation's history".

The MP for Dwyfor Meirionnydd and leader of Plaid Cymru in Westminster also said the commission will provide the opportunity for Wales to be "in the driving seat of its own destiny."

Mr Llwyd outlined his views on the future political landscape of Wales during a speech at a Plaid Cymru conference in Anglesey.

"The Silk Commission has already published its first report, recommending that the Welsh Assembly should be given borrowing powers and greater control over taxation," said Mr Llwyd "We in Plaid have been calling for this for many years.

"Within a year, the commission will publish its second report, and here too Plaid can lay claim to having set the stage for where progressive Welsh politics should be heading".

He added: "The political landscape of the UK is changing irrevocably, and it's vital that Wales keeps pace with that change."

“odinhouse and since 1997 the rest of the UK has been doing great has it. Obviously you are unaware that Westminster has put us 1 trillion in debt, with borrowing going up over 100 billion this year alone. Yes a great job Westminster has done.

One thing you are right about is that a vote for plaid is a vote against unionism. It's also a shame for you that 80% of the Welsh people want the assembly to remain. It was 78% last year its gone up 2%, it's must be doing a good job. That's democracy for you, even if you don't like it mate”

“---the "next stage in the nation's history" will be the Dark ages, just look back and see what has happened since 1997 . Disaster for Wales. A Vote for Plaid will be a No vote for us Welsh People in Wales that want's to be part of the UK....”

“I think Mr Llwyd is quite correct. This is a great opportunity for Wales and we should all see it as that. The time has now come for major change, not the drip drip we have seen since 1997. It's vital that the WG acquires tax powers. I'm with Cameron when he says there can be no responsibility without accountability.”
