Now hundreds join Facebook group backing Mumbles Pier redevelopment
A CAMPAIGN has been mounted backing the multi-million pound redevelopment of Mumbles Pier.
Hundreds of people have signed up to a Facebook group saying "yes" to the plans, which include a hotel, flats, cafés and entertainment venues.
The news comes just days after it was revealed that a 700-name petition had been collected against the scheme.
Commenting on Facebook, Denise Davey said: "So long overdue — brought friends from the States to show it off, but alas it didn't engender the same amount of awe and appreciation that Tenby drew from them.
"Alas, I still see/remember Mumbles from its former glory days when it was buzzing and vibrant, but not down market."
Other supporters of the redevelopment said the plans looked "great", with Martin Double saying: "What an improvement."
Stuart Thomas also added: "At least there are still some people willing to invest in the future of Mumbles. If it were left to the old people objecting there wouldn't be a future."
However, even though the majority of people commenting on the site were in favour of the development, some have voiced concerns about the planned apartments.
Potential
Jane Harries said: "I agree the area needs development but it should be in keeping and focused on tourism, not overtaken by loads of flats which would ruin it. The potential is there, it is just not being maximised."
A group of local residents have organised the petition against the development of Mumbles Pier. They agree it should be redeveloped but are unhappy with the scale of the plans.
Jan Probert, of Dunns Lane, said: "We do think the pier needs saving and developing, we just believe a low-level development would have been better. It would be lovely with some cafés, entertainment and maybe a band stand, but not with flats covering the headland."
Mrs Probert and other campaigners were today expected to hand their petition to save the Mumbles headland in to Swansea Council's planning department.
A spokesman for Ameco, the company behind the plans, said: "A further detailed application jointly submitted by Ameco and the RNLI, which will specify plans for the pier restoration and new £8 million lifeboat house, is expected in the next few weeks."

“Rather not or can not?
A new hotel is hardly likely to draw a rampaging army of youths down to mumbles?
Face it 99% of young people want to go out , have a few drinks and enjoy themselves.
They are not modern day vikings and to demonise them like this is just daft.
What should happen is a large open air music festival down the mumbles.
Live bands, beer tents and a camping area.
Just what the economy needs, a real shot in the arm in these tough times”

“I'm not quite sure how heather relates a renovated pier , hotel and a plush appartment complex to hordes of vomiting youths running amok in a rampage of drink and violence!
Surely the youth in our society (who are often demonised very unfairly see heathers posts) will be more likely to visit the kingsway and wind street.
I don;t think many of them will give up their nights of pubbing and clubbing for a quite drink in a hotel lobby and a nice view of the sea.
And they certainly won;t be able to afford appartments with a sea view of mumbles head.
As a local man with a large family I fully intend to use the pier and the new facilities there during the summer.
As for these "feral youths" may I suggest your more alarmist readers actually speak to them and you;ll see they are actually human beings.
We were all young once and people should recall that rather than jump on their own moral high horse.
Yes to the development!”

“I have seen the facebook page and there is a rather big rat in amongst the ill-informed. I wonder who will work that one out. This rat equates to another ?”

“Well Barry, Town, if having a revulsion against broken glass, vomit and hideous youths stutting the streets of Mumbles makes me a snob then I am very proud to be one.
Mike, Mumbles; your comment is ignorant to say the least, and, unlike you, Mike, MrsProbert & Co (myself included) DO know what we are petitioning against. But you have no idea do you?
Jon Morriston: there isn't going to be a *hotel* lol.”

“I agree 100% with Steve from Mayals. Mumbles' charms have faded and the area is desperately in need of new investment. The proposals on the table here are potentially very exciting; the new four-star hotel in particular will generate employment both directly and indirectly. However, if we are talking about a much less ambitious scheme solely for waterfront weekend homes then the local economic benefits will surely be marginal. I think we have to wait and see what the detailed planning application contains.”

“Just spotted a sad pair of elderly stick insects in walking boots signing a petition in Dunns Lane. They obviously had no idea what they were signing. Let's hope none of their family ever need rescuing when the RNLI has to adandon its Mumbles operation die to dereliction.”

“weston-super-mare pier is just about to re-open after being burnt down and the mumbles has to compete against places like weston so the pier here must be redeveloped.”

“swansea has already lost the mumbles train and slip bridge. we cannot sit back and let a few hundred elderly nimbys lose us the mumbles pier as well. this redevelopment has to go ahead otherwise there will be no pier in the future.”
