PENYRHEOL'S Year 8 team edged out Gowerton 20-19 in a thrilling first-round Swansea Schools Rugby Cup game at the Elba.

Gowerton were in front in the first minute. Fly-half Sam Cambriani's kick found touch inside the visiting 22 and although Penyrheol secured the line-out, their clearance kick was charged down and flanker Jack Soproniuk pounced to gain the touch down. Centre Adam Fielding converted.

The visitors dominated the next ten minutes as a lack of discipline by the hosts saw them concede a number of penalties. And their pressure resulted in a try in the 11th minute when centre Evan Budge crossed.

Gowerton regained the upper hand and were rewarded with a second try in the 14th minute. Centre Sean Collins was tackled just short of the line and from the resulting scrum, No. 8 Adam Gammon powered over for a score again converted by Fielding.

Gowerton began the second half on the front foot, with the kicking of Cambriani allowing them to dominate position. But Penyrheol's defence was unflinching with centre Budge impressing both with his tackling and his work at the breakdown where he achieved a number of turnovers.

Having repelled Gowerton's attacking threat, the visitors grew in confidence and scored three tries in ten second-half minutes.

A break by fly-half Lewys Edwards put Budge clear and he fed full-back Rhys Gear for his side's second try.

Three minutes later Penyrheol were in front when wing Jack Cousins brushed off some tired tackles.

Then Gear scored his second try when he outstripped the cover to score from halfway.

The hosts were still within a converted try of victory and pressed hard for the winning score.

In the final minute, Cambriani took a quick penalty and it allowed centre Collins to cross wide out. But the conversion missed and it was Penyrheol who deservedly progressed to host Bishop Vaughan in the quarter-final.
