Pensioner falls on 'optical illusion' pavement in Pontypridd
A pensioner was rushed to hospital after falling on a new pavement in Pontypridd which has been likened to an "optical illusion" due to the way it has been tiled.
Morfydd Jenkins fell on the new patterned tiles, which are said to have caused a number of injuries since they were introduced as part of a town centre regeneration scheme.
The 75-year-old woman was X-rayed after the incident, which left her with bruising and cuts to her face and neck.
"I was going to the bus stop and all I remember is falling over the kerb – I didn’t see it," the grandmother said.
Mrs Jenkins added: "I’m feeling alright now but I’m much more cautious about going out on my own."
The design of the tiles on the pavement are so similar to the ones on the road that it makes it difficult for pedestrians to see the four inch drop.
A spokesperson claimed the £10.5million improvement scheme had made the area safer but said the council was "concerned and will be looking into this matter."
