A 20-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested after allegedly losing control of his car and running away from the scene, leaving two passengers trapped and in need of urgent medical attention.

Police later arrested the driver of a Vauxhall Corsa which was involved in a road traffic accident near the Coronation Club in Avon Street, Cymmer, at around 11.30pm on Monday night.

The culprit is alleged to have been under the influence of drugs at the time of the crash.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of driving while unfit through drugs and failing to stop after an accident."

The Welsh Ambulance Service confirmed that two people were conveyed to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend following the incident.

Firefighters also attended the scene and were forced to use cutting equipment to free the passengers.

It is understood that the driver had fled the scene and was later arrested.

The spokesman for South Wales Police added: "An 18-year-old and 20-year-old males suffered injuries that were not life-threatening."

Meanwhile, Cymmer councillor Scot Jones said the issue of speeding in Avon Street needs to be addressed.

Mr Jones said he was shocked and horrified by the accident.

He said: "But what I would say is that I have met with the traffic management team to discuss introducing traffic control measures in that area.

"There is an ongoing issue with speed there and we have been monitoring it. It is clear something needs to be done."
