Parking review 'to save towns'
A SWANSEA-BASED AM has called on councils across Wales to review rules on parking in order to save their high streets.
South Wales West AM urged councils to "think the unthinkable".
The Shadow Transport Minister said: "For years, local councils have penalised the motorist — especially those trying to drive into our town centres to support local shops.
"But many of these parking restrictions were imposed decades ago in very different times. They remain for historical reasons only — but do not serve current requirements.
"I want councils to review all the parking restrictions they have in place to see if they are still needed or could be scrapped. Councils need to start looking at ways of encouraging shoppers away from out of town centres where they can park easily and for free and to head instead for our traditional town, city and village centres.
