Park is jewel in our crown
THE idea that we may soon be marking the centenary of the gift of Parc Howard to the people of Llanelli by opening it up to cars is beyond belief.
Throughout Europe the Slow Movement is busy creating green, traffic-free zones for the benefit of the people living in its towns and cities.

A Carmarthenshire Council spokesman claimed Pembrey Country Park had 12 car parks and was perfectly safe.
If he can't tell the difference between a country park and a town park then he's possibly in the wrong job.

Town parks, which can be reached on foot by thousands of people, are crucial for the well being and recreation of the local population. Parks are, in a sense, the lungs that enable us to breathe easily, away from noise, pollution and danger.
During term-time whole classes from Old Road School and Ysgol y Ffwrnes use the Old Road park entrance. This gateway is near the brow of a hill over which cars travel at a terrifying speed towards Furnace.
This is where it is proposed cars can enter and leave the park.
Parc Howard has been neglected in recent years. It is grossly understaffed and there is talk of the current workforce of four being reduced to two. The maintenance of our public parks should be near the top of our list of spending priorities rather than near the bottom.
Parc Howard needs a makeover. Many of the proposed improvements are to be welcomed.
The efforts of the Parc Howard Association are to be applauded. However Parc Howard should not be commercialised. It will never make a financial profit but it is a treasured jewel in the crown of Llanelli and it should be treated with tender loving care.
