PARENTS of pupils at a closing school have been given more time to decide their children's future.

When the Assembly announced on Friday Cwm Primary School would close for good this summer, parents were asked to decide if they wanted to take up a guaranteed place at Cwm Glas school by Tuesday.

However, parents and school officials were furious families had been given such a short time to decide.

Now, Swansea Council has extended the decision day — to Friday.

A council spokeswoman said: "Following concerns raised by parents about the length of time they had to make a decision on whether to send their children to Cwm Glas Primary, Swansea Council's education department has extended the deadline for parents until Friday."

The axe finally fell on the Bonymaen school, after a long battle against Swansea council's plans to close it.

Following the council decision last year, the school appealed to the Assembly.

Swansea Council's cabinet member for education Mike Day said: "We appreciate parents of pupils at Cwm primary are being asked to make a decision about their choice of school in a short space of time.

"Unfortunately, this is because of the length of time it took the minister to decide on the proposal which was submitted to the Assembly in August.

"We, like the school, had been expecting a response by Christmas.

"As the changes will affect admissions at other schools, such as Cwm Glas, the education department needs to have a firm view of numbers. If parents have any questions, they can contact our school and governor unit on 636551."

Parents, teachers and pupils at Llanmorlais primary in Gower and Arfryn primary in Penlan are currently waiting to hear their fate after they also appealed to the Assembly over Swansea Council's decision to close them this summer.
