Pace of regeneration quickens in SA1
WORK has begun on a multi- million pound housing development in Swansea's SA1 district. Property developer Charles Church has started work on its £13.6 million housing project off Fabian Way on the waterfront.
The news follows an application to Swansea Council for planning permission for a £20 million retail, leisure, residential and care development on a plot close to the Charles Church site in SA1.
Charles Church is now laying foundations for its 48 homes at its site known as The Haven. The brand's regional managing director for Wales, Glyn Mabey, recently confirmed an £800 million strategic plan to build 5,000 new homes across Wales with a heavy concentration on Swansea.
Mabey said: "The greater Swansea conurbation is certainly one we will be targeting.

Hale Construction is also in the process of building 30 three and four-bedroom houses in SA1. Marketing agent Savills confirmed Hale's scheme known as Harbour View has proved extremely popular with the first nine sales reserved off-plan, and five homes already occupied. Meanwhile, more than 300 new jobs could be created if a £20 million development gets approved in SA1. The Waterside Centre is likely to include 15,000 sq ft of restaurants and shops, a 94-bedroom care centre for older people and 25 duplex residential units. Waterstone Estates and 55 Plus Limited have submitted the development which could be completed by 2015 if it is approved.
Developers behind the scheme expect it will create 225 jobs once it is up and running and 120 positions in the construction phase.
The Waterside Centre is likely to cost around £20 million in total and has been designed to create a continuous frontage of leisure, retail, piazza, walkways and public facilities overlooking the water.
A spokesman for the scheme said: "The large number of new jobs created will establish the development as a major source of employment. The major construction works to deliver the development will also create jobs in the short-term, and provide a considerable input to the economy."

“I agree with the comments below. The authorities need to ensure that there is ample provision for cafes, restaurants and leisure facilities in the Sa1 development. Otherwise, the area is in danger of becoming a second Marina - an attractive, but somewhat soulless corner of the city.”

I agree that we need more than just residential in SA1, though the Waterside Centre looks interesting. Some years ago, we were promised a Leisure Centre, includsing Cinema, in SA1. that seems to have gone very quiet.”

“why haven't some retail units been included in these housing developments of harbour view and the haven so to have more cafes and restaurants along the dockside ?
visitors won't come to sa1 to stare at a load of house !!!”
