Police's file on council three
POLICE have been called in by the ombudsman to consider whether a criminal investigation should ensue following complaints made against the leader of Swansea Council, his deputy and a councillor.
Last month the Evening Post reported that Lib Dem Chris Holley and Independent John Hague had been referred to the local Government watchdog for Wales, along with Conservative councillor Paxton Hood- Williams.
The Post understands the matter relates to alleged discussions about support for the ruling Lib Dem-led coalition — and in particular, giving extra spending to projects in certain Tory-held wards.
Yesterday, police confirmed that they had received correspondence from the ombudsman in relation to the three men.
A spokesman said: "South Wales Police has received correspondence from the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales in relation to complaints made against three elected members of the City and County of Swansea.
"The matter has been referred to police to consider whether or not a criminal investigation should be undertaken.
"This process will be conducted by the force's economic crime unit."
Mr Holley, said he welcomed the police looking into the matter "to put things to rest once and for all".
"I welcome what the police have to say," he said.
"I'm confident myself and my colleagues are innocent.
"We are hoping for a speedy result."
Mr Holley said that once the matter was over he would be making a full statement regarding the alleged complaints, adding that he and his colleagues had adhered to their code of conduct, which is that they should not speak to the media about the matters.
The council's deputy leader, Mr Hague, said: "I am happy to discuss these matters with any of the relevant authorities and I am confident there has been no wrongdoing. Until these matters have been fully investigated I will not be commenting any further."
Mr Hood-Williams said while the ombudsman was investigating he wasn't in a position to comment.
"I'm not declining to comment, I'm just not in a position to comment," he said.
