P.O. will close - despite 'outrage'
CARMARTHEN'S Crown Post Office will be closed — despite fierce opposition in the town.
Roger Gale, the general manager of UK Crown Post Offices, met councillors in the town and confirmed the service in the market town will be privatised and moved to an undisclosed retail location. Staff will be employed by the new retail partner.
Councillor Jeff Thomas said: "Having listened to the general manager's reasons for the move we conveyed the outrage felt by people in Carmarthen and put forward the compromise suggestion of moving to a smaller, dedicated unit near the present Post Office. But that suggestion was turned down flat.''
Plaid members are now trying to get the issue raised in the Welsh Assembly and the UK Parliament. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition opposing the plans.
