Ospreys: Steve Tandy sets the bar high for 'superb' Dan Biggar
OSPREYS head coach Steve Tandy believes fly-half Dan Biggar is ready to deliver another big season — for his region and country.
The fly-half established himself as the man firmly in possession of the coveted Wales No. 10 jersey with a series of composed displays for Rob Howley's Six Nations-winning side last season.
With Scarlets rival Rhys Priestland set to return following his Achilles troubles, Blues youngster Rhys Patchell expected to challenge after a fine breakthrough year and James Hook steering the ship at Perpignan, there is going to be plenty of competition for the pivot role for the autumn series opener against South Africa in November.
However, Tandy belies 23-year-old Biggar will continue to develop as one of the key figures in the Ospreys' quest for silverware this season.
"Dan was superb for us last season and I expect the same from him this year," said Tandy.
"I have been in charge of the Ospreys for more than 18 months and in that time he has been absolutely fantastic.
"He has played over a 100 games for us, but he is still a young man, he has a long time in the game.
"He wants to be out there and play, he has a great attitude and wants to be successful, not just for himself but the group.
"He suits how we want to play. It obviously helps having a pack with the likes of Alun Wyn, Ian Evans, Hibbs, Ryan Jones, Tips and Adam in front of him, but I was hugely impressed with him last year.
"He has been knocking on the door with Wales for a while. He really deserved his opportunity in last season's Six Nations and I thought he grew throughout the tournament.
"It will be great for Wales to have Priestland back fit, but he is going to have real competition with Dan for that No. 10 jersey.
"I expect Dan to keep progressing and really setting his marker for Wale."
The Ospreys, four times champions, will kick-off their RaboDirect Pro12 challenge at Treviso a week on Saturday.
Tandy's side will complete their pre-season action when they take on Bath at The Rec on Friday evening (7.30).
