Oldest woman in Neath Port Talbot marks 108th birthday
IT has been all celebrations at a Cwmavon home to mark the birthday of the county's oldest woman.
Elizabeth Mary Simmonds (known as Mary), who was born on September 18, 1905, has reached the grand age of 108.
It makes her the oldest living person in Neath Port Talbot, and the fourth oldest in Wales.
Formerly residing in Western Avenue she now lives at Min-Yr-Afon residential home in Cwmavon.
Her old neighbour Darren Boxer said Ms Simmonds, who has two children who live away, had a great time marking her landmark birthday.
As well as visits from friends and family she received scores of cards, presents, balloons and flowers.
"Mary spent the day celebrating with friends, family, former neighbours and the staff of the Min-Yr-Afon residential home," he said. "Mary also received her fifth telegram and birthday card from Her Majesty the Queen, and was visited by the mayor of Port Talbot, councillor Marian Lewis."
Mrs Lewis said she thoroughly enjoyed meeting Ms Simmonds.
"She was as sharp as a knife," she said.
"She is fantastic. She was really enjoying her self.
"She had some of her great nieces there.
"I think she is an extremely independent woman.
"The only problem she has is with her sight and hearing but you can accept that. It is a fantastic achievement to reach 108."
Earlier this month tributes were paid following the death of Phyllis Mogford who was aged 108.
Ms Mogford attributed her long life to eating radishes and spring onions.
She would have been 109 next month, but passed away in August at Pencaerau Nursing Home, Old Road, Neath, where she had lived for the past six years.
