ON my daily walk as a Swansea pensioner trying to keep fit, I noticed four kerbside drains were completely blocked and another three nearly blocked.

That's seven all within half a mile.

This may mean many more in towns and villages throughout the principality, resulting in road closures and traffic chaos. Although councils do their best, too much money would be needed monitoring the situation, so if pensioners like me with nothing do were encouraged to report to the council these areas on a free phone number, this could result in a reduction in unnecessary flooding.

To encourage the reporting perhaps the names of those taking part could be put into a computer draw every six months with the prize being a ticket to see a team of their favourite colour.

“Great idea Harry, though to be fair I highlighted blocked drains years ago to no avail, it then appeared to be an in house fight between, Welsh water board and local council highways departments, as to whom really is responsible, I believe it is with Welsh water board! but not quite sure as to what extent. Perhaps someone in authority could assist this page by replying. It's all well and good that the drain looks clear, but are the underground drainage pipes also free from congestion and in good state of repair. Again there are culverts along some A and B roads, which need to be cleaned out frequently, I've seen farmers dredging them on occasions to protect flood their crops. Though nowadays we must bear in mind that the heavy deluge of water is indeed quite frightening, as I've not seen the like of in many a year and it appears to be annually. Possibly another system needs to be adapted to take the added pressure, though costing will obviously be instrumental towards this, hence the in house fighting between Welsh water and local council highways department.”
