IN response to Selina Pouillet (Have Your Say, Sept 21), I am a "permanent resident" of Uplands Ward, and I fully support Councillor John Bayliss's views on the proposed Atlantic Array wind farm.

While I also support Ms Pouillet's suggestion that all new builds should incorporate solar panels, it is going to take a lot more than this to deal with global warming.

All forms of power generation are to some extent inefficient, but we are going to need large-scale carbon free solutions to our energy needs in the future and wind power will be an essential part of this.

Perhaps Oili Hedman (ibid) would now like to take some time "to read every word, analyse every calculation and calculate the impact" of the proposed new nuclear power station at Wylfa on Anglesey — not forgetting to include mining, processing and transportation of the fuel, construction of the plant, decommissioning of the plant and long-term storage of the fuel — and then tell us how green that is.

The nuclear power station at Trawsfynydd was closed in 1991. Some 21 years later it is still in the process of being "decommissioned" by the taxpayer funded Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.

This work is likely to continue for many years to come, all at taxpayers' expense.

The subsidies paid to renewable generators pale into insignificance when compared to the billions of public money that is necessary to prop up the nuclear industry.

“Keith - there is obviously a cost to nuclear but at least it provides reliable, full time, uninterrupted power to the grid, unlike wind turbines which do none of these things. Maria McCaffery of Renewable UK boasted last week that wind had produced it's highest output of electricity this year, a full 4 GW on ONE DAY of the year, 14th September. What she did not tell you that on this same day, £580,000 was paid to Scottish wind farms to STOP PRODUCING electricity because the grid was overloaded. This illustrates the basic flaw in wind energy. It is not available on demand and has to be backed up full time by conventional power generation so it is a total waste of money and ruining our tourist economy here in Mid Wales and many other scenic areas, threatening our health and well-being due to noise, flicker and infra sound, clogging our roads for years to come with massive abnormal loads, polluting the source of our water supply with concrete, disturbing peat which releases CO2, and enriching wealthy landowners at the expense of poor consumers. Nuclear may have it's downside but no where near as bad as relying on the wind to blow to keep the lights on!
